Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Protection Officer - Research 

 About the Job
The overall objective for DRC in Turkey is the protection of people’s rights and promotion of durable solutions for displacement affected populations based on humanitarian principles and human rights. More immediate objectives focus on protection of rights and support of livelihoods as well as a broader focus on social cohesion between refugees and host communities. DRC works with stakeholders, duty bearers and beneficiaries in accomplishing these objectives.

DRC is implementing multiple grants which require the planning and production of high-quality, evidence-based analysis and reporting on protection issues faced by its target populations, and their root causes. The aim of this analytical approach is to strengthen the knowledge base for programming and advocacy activities by DRC and its partners.

  • In collaboration with the protection specialist, the candidate will support continuous research and analysis of protection issues faced by refugees and migrants in the local context; and provide recommendations on strategic solutions;
  • Liaise with field protection teams and DRC partners conduct primary data collection and systematically collect evidence to inform DRC programming, ensuring inputs from field teams in prioritizing research topics.
  • Support the protection specialist in advocacy initiatives;

This role has a country focus and ensures compliance to DRC procedures and guidelines within the country. The role contributes to the development of country strategies, which are translated into action plans and day-to-day tasks. The role provides support and/or technical guidance to country operations while overseeing country activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In consultation with the Protection Specialist, field teams and key external stakeholders’/duty bearers the position holder will support the research unit to conduct and disseminate high-quality protection issues-focused research.

More specifically Protection Officer – Research will:

  • Support research planning by identifying and developing research questions, developing research tools (surveys, questionnaires), identifying research participants, in coordination with protection field teams and the protection specialist.
  • Support data collection, in coordination with DRC field staff and implementing partners, including conducting focus group discussions and individual interviews, provide support or lead training of DRC and partner protection teams to execute data collection exercises.
  • Take responsibility for transcribing, cleaning and analyzing raw data.
  • Lead on identifying experts, including NGOs, CBOs and other partners, in the country and in conducting expert interviews when required as part of the research process.
  • Support in producing (drafting and editing) regular reports on specific topics
  • Follow up closely on contextual developments and propose topics for evidence-based reports and briefing papers based also on the inputs received by protection field teams.
  • Present reports internally, adhering to information sharing protocols, including providing briefings on findings, recommendations and trends to staff and stakeholders;
  • Based on information collected as well as other sources contribute to situation analyses and propose adjustments or additions to DRC strategies;
  • Any other tasks as required

About you
To be successful in this role, you must have Relevant university degree (e.g. political science, international development, or economics Bachelor’s) or equivalent professional qualification

Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in protection work or research, experience with NGOs is an advantage
  • Experience in report writing skills, experience in conducting interviews is an advantage
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work
  • independently as well as cooperatively with team members
  • Excellent skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, knowledge of other analysis software an advantage
  • Full professional proficiency in English and Turkish
  • Available for frequent travel across the south east of Turkey as well as Ankara and Istanbul as per research requirements.

Desired qualifications

  • Prior knowledge of research methodologies (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Knowledge of Arabic and Turkish
  • Prior experience in conducting KII and FGDs

Contract length: 2 Months (renewable dependent on both funding and performance)

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for Nationals.
