Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Protection Officer – CBP

About the Job

The overall purpose of the role is to to lead the Community Based Protection team and provide community based protection(CBP) interventions and support the facilitation of communities to identify and mitigate the risks of protection issues affecting them.

Sector responsibilities: Advocacy for the rights of displaced people in their context of displacement, child protection initiatives, individual protection assistance based on vulnerability, legal aid, land & property rights, sexual and gender-based violence prevention, registration services for the internally displaced and refugees, monitoring of rights and rights awareness-raising, facilitation of return and repatriation processes.

Geographic scope: Hatay Field Office

This role has an area focus and ensures compliance to DRC procedures and guidelines within the area. The role contributes to the development of country strategies, which are translated into action plans and day-to-day tasks.

Main responsibilities

Programming & Operations

• Identify and develop community-based protection mechanisms and interventions in the specific geographical areas of operation;

•Oversee the CBP team and with them implement CBP interventions including formation and support of community-based committees, community initiated social cohesion projects (CIPs); community risk mapping and needs assessment exercises and stake-holder mappings for communities;

•Based on sound and regular feedback gathering from communities, develop, design, and support in implementing capacity building plans for community-based organizations to better respond to protection issues;

•Based on feedback gathering, develop, design, and support in disseminating relevant information on – among others – access to rights and services, protection principles, safe identification, and gender awareness;

•In collaboration with and under guidance from the Travel Safety Information (TSI) coordinator, develop and implement relevant information curricula around mine risk education and other relevant topics to momentary and permanent refugee returns and re-integration;

•Develop and maintain effective working relationships, including service as referral focal points, with relevant stakeholders including partner agencies, community leaders and service provider

•Identify and Refer immediate issues/protection cases to respective officer and/or Protection Team Leader; including updating relevant databases on referrals and feedback

•Support monitoring and evaluation of projects as needed.

Partner Capacity Building and Management

•Assist protection management team in selection and management of implementing partners (sub-grantees, community based organizations and community committees) if requested

•Assist in the development of partner capacity building activities relating to CBP including outreach activities, committees, awareness raising sessions, recreational activities, etc);

•Prepare and update work plans for CBP activities with partner focal points;

•Contribute and support the writing of CBP monthly reports;

Coordination and representation

•Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the focal points, and with relevant stakeholders including partner agencies, community leaders and service providers and government

•Support the protection Team Leader and/or Manager in liaising with local institutions (migration authorities, municipalities, and family and social services departments, among others), advising on sound capacity building and structural support based on protection service delivery gaps.

•Represent DRC at meetings and other relevant technical coordination meetings if requested

About you

To be successful in this role, you must have relevant university degree (e.g. political science, education, international/community development, anthropology, sociology, social work, law, or economics) or equivalent professional qualification

Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required experience and competencies

•Minimum 2 years of practical experience in sector area working for an INGO

•Excellent skill in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

•Advanced English proficiency

•Fluency in Arabic – Turkish proficiency a strong asset

•Experience working in the humanitarian field (preferably experience from southern Turkey)

•Experience in protection activities and/or social or health sector.

•An understanding of humanitarian/civil society issues in Turkey and the region

•Experience working with Syrian refugees

•Strong organizational and communication skills

•Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment

•Ability to multi-task and cope with competing demands under tight deadlines

•Flexibility, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn from others

Contract length: 5 Months (renewable dependent on both funding and performance)

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for Nationals.
