General Functions:  

As a consequence of enhanced surveillance along borders with Turkey (Bulgaria-Turkey and Greece-Turkey) the main migration flows from Turkey towards the EU are now taking place via the North Western Land route. Since January 2020, IOM enhanced its presence in Edirne, Keşan, Uzunköprü, Meriç, Ipsala and Enez and is providing humanitarian support for migrants and refugees apprehended at land and rescued on sea including NFI, Food and PSS.

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Office in Istanbul and direct supervision of the Senior Project Assistant in Edirne; and, in collaboration with relevant units at Headquarters and the Administrative Centers, the successful candidate will be responsible and accountable for social work and protection cases in Edirne and in its districts;

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Provide Farsi-English-Turkish/ English-Farsi-Turkish interpretation services to IOM field assistants in Edirne. Maintain a level of neutrality during the interpretation and avoid providing his/her personal inputs in delivering messages between the interviewer and the refugee.
  2. Provide clerical support to IOM field assistants during the preparation.
  3. Provide ad hoc support for written Farsi - Turkish and English translations.
  4. Assist in the reception point for refugees and migrants apprehended in Edirne when need be.
  5. Provide general information and answer basic queries on the procedures to the refugees.
  6. Contribute to reporting and statistics as requested.
  7. Comply with the IOM Standards of Conduct and the IOM Confidentiality Agreement.
  8. Maintain a professional appearance and migrant-friendly demeanor at all times.
  9. Maintain positive working relationships within the IOM team and with government authorities.
  10. Maintain confidentiality and discretion in treating applicants’ personal information.
  11. Assist the process of referring the vulnerable migrants who has special needs.
  12. Immediately inform management of any problems or issues related to the daily work and make suggestions on how to improve efficiency and client service.
  13. Perform other such related duties as may be required.

 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Education:

  • High school diploma from an accredited academic institution, with four years of relevant experience; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in Political or Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Human Rights, Linguistics or related fields from an accredited academic institution, with two years of relevant professional experience.

 

Experience:

  • Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking and other vulnerable groups; and,
  • Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.
  • Having experience in relevant field as interpreter.
  • Being able to travel,
  • Proven analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Good level of computer literacy.
  • Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, other national / international institutions, United Nation Agencies and other organizations.

 

Languages:

  • Fluency in Turkish and Farsi is required.
  • Working knowledge of English, Arabic, Urdu and French is advantageous.
