Job Summary

The Business Development Manager (BDM) will lead a dynamic team that is charged with generating new procurement contracts between buyers (e.g. INGOs, corporations, larger businesses, governments, development contractors) in Turkey and the region, and Building Markets’ network of more than 2,300 verified SMEs. To do this, the candidate will leverage the organization’s model, resources, and existing matchmaking strategies.

 

Hungry for a challenge and passionate about small businesses and their ability to drive job creation, the BDM should be target-driven and extroverted. S/he must know how to implement and adapt a strategy, effectively allocate human resources, and be able to ensure that all key performance indicators are exceeded.

 

The ideal candidate will be a creative professional who can adapt to emerging dynamics and business requirements related to COVID-19 – translating challenges into opportunities. The BDM reports to the Country Director and will have a minimum of 5-years’ experience with a demonstrable track record of success working in sales, supply chains or with SMEs.

Responsibilities and Duties

 

Planning

  • Leverage strong existing knowledge of key Turkish and regional markets (size, accessibility, major institutional buyers, local suppliers) to expand Building Markets’ knowledge and understanding of high growth and job intensive sectors that offer opportunities to refugee and Syrian-owned businesses and individuals;
  • Develop forecasts for existing and future procurement needs in priority sectors;
  • Translate trends in procurement needs into practical strategies that ensure efficient business processes and high-value services targeting Building Markets’ business network and partners;
  • As required, work with other program teams and provide input to improve the overall strategy and efficiency of the Building Markets program;
  • Other tasks as required.

 

Business Development Lead a team that facilitates at least US $5mm in contracts annually. To do this:

  • Design and implement business development plans for each viable target sector and institutional buyer;
  • On an ongoing basis, assess demand and supply sides of the market to identify quick wins;
  • Drive institutional buyers, large companies, and SMEs to Building Markets’ services by developing and maintain excellent working relationships;
  • Coordinate the expansion of Building Markets’ business network through additional business verification and profiling on https://entrepreneurs.buildingmarkets.org;
  • Design events that showcase Syrian and refugee-led businesses and create concrete opportunities for them in the Turkish market.

 

Staff Management

  • Supervise and mentor the Business Development Associates;
  • Foster a competitive yet collaborative team environment;
  • Lead by example, demonstrating a culture of action and diligence by rolling up sleeves;
  • Carry out regular performance appraisals of direct reports.

 

Tracking and Reporting

  • Utilize systems are in place to track results and impact;
  • Oversee data gathering, follow-up with buyers, investors, and vendors, and ensure accuracy and effectiveness of data management;
  • Gather, verify and compile monthly quantitative and qualitative reporting from staff whose work feeds directly into strategies that improve engagement, understanding, and products targeting businesses and their prospective clients;
  • Ensure results and success stories are provided to the communications team in a timely manner.

Reporting Lines

 

Reports to: Country Director

Supervisory: Oversees up to 4 employees.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, related field or substantial equivalent in professional experience;
  • Familiarity with Turkish market and regional market;
  • Ability to leverage networks to cultivate business contacts;
  • Ability to self-perform all required tasks, while demonstrating leadership skills;
  • Motivated self-starter and results-oriented;
  • Demonstrable experience in organizational representation and business development;
  • Excellent communication, networking, and client relationship skills;
  • Strong analytical and writing skills;
  • Experience leading initiatives in the region with a private sector focus;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Work authorization in Turkey (not required at the time of application);
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and meet critical deadlines, while maintaining accuracy and quality.

Desired Qualifications

  • At least 5 to 10 years’ sales experience, client relationship management, supply chain management, CSR or other relevant business functions;
  • Familiarity with trade facilitation and exporter industries;
  • Existing relationships with industry representatives;
  • Arabic and Turkish language skills.

Travel

  • Travel within Turkey, and possibly the region.

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience
